I lived in Renningen up until 1983. I was involved in a car accident, the driver was John Strock. He was laid up at 5th G. My friend Andrea and I used to go to 5th G every weekend. They had CW bands there. We had an awesome time!!

Robert, I was stationed at Wallace Barricks from 69-72. I was a window clerk and worked many units all over the place, from Patch to 5th general but did my final year as NCOIC at Robinson Barracks. You are the first person I've found that was stationed at Wallace. It is a small world.

Robert Furgason... I was stationed a couple of kilometers away at Wallace Barracks just down the hill from Robinson Barracks. I worked in the Army Post Office at Wallace Barracks from 75-77. I loved the Stuttgart area and we would go to 5th G every Sunday morning to the mess hall for breakfast because the food was so good! I work with a lady that was born in Bad Cannstatt at 5th G. Small world.

Ronald Olds.........I was stationed at the 5th General Hospital as a Medical Corpsman from 1971 - 1973. I worked primarily on the Orthopedics Unit. I met some wonderful people, whom I've unfortunately lost contact over the last 40+ years. I went on to become a Registered Nurse (BSN) and then Master's of Science and was a Chief Nursing Officer for the majority of my professional career. I was fortunate to be able to recently retire early (63 years old). If any of my close friends ever read this comment, I would love to hear from you. I few of the names I remember are Larry, Mark, Bob Leonard, and Juan-Angel Longoria. You can find me on Facebook.

I was born there on April 25, 1980. My dad was stationed over there. I would love to return one day to see where I was born. At 34 years old I struggled to prove myself as a US. Citizen when I lost my birth abroad certificate. I'm happy to inform you a year later I recieved a new Birth Certificate after alot of circles and confusion. Never give up!

I was stationed at Robinson Barracks from 1968 through 1970--HQ,USAG Public/Civil Affairs and AFN correspondent. My memories of 5th General revolve around the birth of my daughter in October 1969. Wonderful hospital, great staff and I'm embarrassed that I can't remember the name of my then-wife's doctor. I think it was Major Farinhold. If anyone was a staffer back then and you remember, please post it. What, if anything, remains of the hospital? Would love to know.

Chris,
I served as the Chief Logistics at the 5th G from 85-88. Was there through eight of the major building renovations including the main in-patient building, the power/steam plant and of course the Logistics Building itself. 3 weeks after I arrived, our motor pool was attacked with fire bombs set under three vehicles. Luckily the bomb maker was inept and they failed to explode. I explored most of the tunnels that could be occupied but never down into the lowest level, which was flooded the entire time I was there. The electrical distribution mains running through those tunnels were a major risk. I never went anywhere without a flashlight. I remember discovering that the Germans during WWII had apparently painted a stripe of radium-based paint on tunnel walls so that people could navigate them during blackouts. It had been painted over but the radiological safety inspection team went crazy when their Geiger counters peaked in the tunnels. I served with many great folks there. Col Hansen was Commander when I arrived, a beloved man. My last boss there was the DCA, Col. Case. Too many names I've forgotten but many very fond memories of being the Chief of Log in what was considered to be one of the Army's most challenging hospital facilities in Europe because of it's size and age and condition. The people made up for all of the physical deficiencies with dedication and creativity to turn it into a first rate hospital we were very proud of. Glad you share the same feelings. John Chaffee

Hi Don
I remeber 5th General Hospital in 1992 as I was transferred to Heidelbelg end of 92. I have fond memories of the place and the staff there. I used to run at lunch time and the evenings through the vineyards which had a terrific view of Stuttgart. I was at 5th General from 1988 to 1992 and worked at Logistics. I went back to Germany in 2004 but was shocked to see that 5th General is pretty much a housing area. gone are most of the buildings except the old hospital building which was the Logistics HQ. The medical centre is used by the German Police now. the HQ building and car park has all been demolished to make way for housing. I am glad I took photos which preserve my time at 5th General and Robinson Barracks. I left Germany in 1993 but I had an amazing time there with the US Army that I will never forget.

I was one of the last stationed at 5th G , I was property book holder and was a big part of the closing down of the Hospital. It had I believe 3 tunnels under the hospital and the bottom two were flooded, there was a bar on premises and you could drink till content and stagger through the tunnel to the barracks at the other end, lol. This was my second tour in Germany just after the Gulf war, many good times.
